VL Developing Visible Learners

“When students know how to learn, they are able to become their own teachers.” —Nancy Frey, Douglas Fisher, and John Hattie

Imagine students who describe their learning in these terms: “I know where I’m going, I have the tools I need for the journey, and I monitor my own progress.” Now imagine the extraordinary difference this type of ownership makes in their progress over the course of a school year.

This session provides an insight into the evidence-informed practices that make this scenario an everyday reality in your school and classroom — practices that will significantly increase your students’ capacity to thrive as they take responsibility for their own learning.

Whether you’re brand-new to the Visible Learning research, you’ve taken a look, or you’ve read one (or two!) of the books and are looking for what’s next, join to see and hear practical examples from educators who are in the process of implementing this important work in their schools and classrooms.

Leave this session with:

  • Insights into the Visible Learning research, which is the world’s largest evidence base on what works—and what doesn’t — to best move student learning forward,
  • Practical ideas for translating this research into your schools and classrooms,
  • Inspiration from students, teachers and leaders who are experiencing and implementing what works best, and
  • Information and ideas for diving deeper into the evidence-based, Visible Learning+ for you and your school.

Target Audience: School and system leaders and teachers who are interested in learning more about Visible Learning and developing visible learners.

The Presenter

Mr David Whitehead

David Whitehead CorwinDavid Whitehead has experience in education across a range of sectors within Australia and internationally for over 20 years. He has supported learning as a classroom teacher, department leader and professional learning facilitator for the International Baccalaureate before joining Corwin. David has led and supported teacher development and leadership decision making across Europe and Asia-Pacific.

As a Professional Learning Leader at Corwin Australia, David supports schools across Asia-Pacific to translate the Visible Learning research into practical steps so that educators can monitor, evaluate and ultimately increase their impact on learners and learning. A key question David asks educators is, 'What kind of learners are you really trying to develop in your school or classroom?' He then supports schools to align systems and practices to this aspirational goal.

When not in his garage immersed in woodwork projects, David enjoys spending time with his 3 teenage children, relaxing in a cafe or trying to cook the perfect steak.
