HOW TO CREATE WORLD CLASS TESTS INCLUDING A PRACTICAL INTRODUCTION TO ITEM RESPONSE THEORY, AND WHY IT IS NOW THE BASIS FOR ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS ACROSS THE WORLD Dates: 19 to 20 November 2018 rescheduled to 12 to 13 Nov 2018 (2 day workshop) Workshop Fee: Other Information: Dates Available for School or Cluster Booking: 14 and 16 November 2018 Workshop Description People often assume that, because assessing students is so much part of a teacher’s work, it doesn’t require any extra expertise. As teachers we know this to be untrue, but many of us lack the knowledge we need to do it well. This is particularly the case when it comes to designing and analyzing assessments which are fit for the 21st century. This two-day course will provide an essential introduction to good test writing. Traditional tests tend to consist of a series of questions on which candidates score marks. Typically, these marks are then simply added together to give a final total. We will look at how that simple process gives us rather poor information about our students, and we will look at more sophisticated methods of designing and analyzing tests based on Item Response Theory, which will yield much better information. On the course, we will cover the following topics:
This will be a practical and intensive introduction to 21st century assessment techniques. We will make some use of statistical information, but we will not be asking you to calculate things for yourself. In the worldwide assessment community, there is a wide body of knowledge in the areas covered by this course. We will introduce you to this knowledge base and help you to access published research, so that you have all the tools you need to create your own high-quality assessments. No special equipment is needed for the course. All notes and handouts will be provided on paper and will be available electronically. A pen and a smile will be all that you need to bring with you.
